Some exciting things are happening at the beginning of 2015! MakeDo Entertainment is headed to Chicago to shoot a video for a client.
This client, to be exact.
The beautiful and talented Alexys Fleming is a self-taught makeup artist and body painter. She owns her own business (MadeULook by Lex), and is a personal hero of mine (and many others). She is also a Type 1 diabetic, and is the creator of the Step Out Walk team MadeULook for a Cure, which, in 2013, raised over $5,000 towards a cure. Still not impressed? Well, you should be.
I've been a fan of her work for a while. In fact, one of the big reasons our first (and favorite) short film, "ECHO", was made was because I was so inspired by her, passion, determination, and sheer creativity that I wrangled together the ragtag team of three that is now MakeDo Entertainment.
Eventually, I sent her a video (through the mail on a flash drive, 'cause I'm old-fashioned), and I told her that although I wasn't a makeup artist or body painter, I was an aspiring filmmaker who was motivated by her, and the things that she's done.
I chose to send her a video because that's the type of artist I consider myself. She regularly receives drawings, paintings, and crafts from incredibly talented people who want to thank her for everything she does. I thought a video would be a good reflection of the type of art I'm trying to pursue, and would also just be a bit different.
I thought nothing of it after that, hoping only that she would receive the video and enjoy it (rather than, you know, be totally creeped out by it).
Not too long after that, Lex reached one million subscribers on her YouTube channel, which you should definitely check out here: youtube.com/MadeYewLook.
In celebration of that milestone, she would be throwing "Lex's Haunted Ball" in Chicago, inviting subscribers that would be able to attend. That's when I received an email from her, asking if I would be interested in her hiring me as a videographer for the event.
I think this part is very important:
After I concluded that I was indeed not dreaming, my immediate thought was, "Jee, too bad I can't go!"
After a moment, I asked myself, "...why not?"
This is something that I feel like a lot of people go through when handed opportunities. New experiences can fall outside of people's comfort zones, which can make them think that they fall out of their reach.
I, personally, LOVE that this is outside of MakeDo Entertainment's comfort zone. I love it because I want to see what we're capable of. How will you know otherwise? You will never know what doors new opportunities and experiences can open if you never open any of them.
Needless to say, there are a few big firsts for us coming up. But we're absolutely ready to experience them. We'll be keeping you updated about our adventures with more blog posts in the future, so stay tuned!
And I definitely recommend checking out Lex's YouTube channel here; youtube.com/MadeYewLook, and see what the big deal is.
